The complete system is built into the shoe and contains distance measurement sensors, sensors to
analyze the foot movement, a vibration motor for tactile feedback, an ultra bright LED as well as a
wireless communication link to a mobile phone. The system is water and dust resistant and is
attached to the front part of the shoe.
As soon as the InnoMake detects an obstacle, the user is notified in a preconfigured manner. The feedback can be acoustic, tactile or visual. The acoustic feedback is played over the mobile phone and can be comfortably heard with bone conduction headphones, without blocking nearby sounds. The vibration feedback is directly perceptive in the inside of the shoe such that the InnoMake can be used without headphones. The visual impulses are sent out over the LED and can give visually
impaired users additional support in the dark.
The type of feedback and the corresponding intensity, as well as the measured range can be configured with a mobile phone app.
By utilizing innovative sensors the shoe warns the user about obstacles in his or her direct path. For example curbs, hydrants or other people.
Every distance measurement is filtered for relevant obstacles and the information is transferred to the mobile phone via Bluetooth. The user can freely configure the desired range, the type of feedback in our included app. The range is adjustable from 0.5 meters up to 5 meters.
Dependent on the speed and intensity of the feedback, the user can differentiate how close the obstacle is to the user.
This simple type of recognition is comparable to modern day parking assistance systems. The mobile app for controlling the InnoMake is available for free in the Apple App Store.
The App interface is intuitive to use and can be controlled completely with the Appe VoiceOver acoustic aid.
The idea of the InnoMake was born at the HTL Mistelbach, as Kevin Pajestka and Daniel Gepp implemented a prototype in the course of their graduate thesis. As students in biomedical and health engineering they had the vision of a shoe with integrated electronics for detecting obstacles. After a one year development phase the tinkerers were able to celebrate their first successes. The system was integrated in an everyday shoe with self developed and designed electronics.
A shoe that can detect obstacles!
After successfully graduating from school HTL Mistalbach Kevin Pajestka decided to found the Tec-Innovation GmbH and started the search for teammates to implement the project. By appearing on the first season of the start up TV-show “2 Minuten 2 Millionen”, Markus Raffer, who is now the co-founder, became aware of Kevin Pajestka and the “brilliant idea”. After getting to know each other the first time both quickly realized they complemented each other ideally with their different skill sets and backgrounds. This was the start if an intensive development process.

To ensure the proper functioning different research and investigations had been carried out. The Lab for walking and gait analysis of the Speising hospital for orthopedics helped us to acquire measurements of an average step for a blind person. 20 different cameras recorded a person moving up and down the lab.
Through this cooperation it was made possible to measure important features and values to design an ideal shoe and correctly plan out in which parts of the shoe which components are built in. With the help of DI Dr. A. Kranzl(Hospital Speising) further ideas about a prototype with regards to inclinations, bendability and stability were discussed.

All the components of our product, except the electronic components, are from Europe. Also the assembly of the electronic components of our circuit boards take place in Austria. Our assembly house is the family business, D&B Buchta und Degeorgi Mechatronik GmbH, from Soß, Lower Austria. There, all components are carefully assembled on our circuit boards and undergo thorough quality inspections..

The CE conformance testing is currently being carried out, partly by external testing bodies (such as TÜV), such that the first InnoMakes can be delivered according to plan by June 2020.
